March 26, 2003 Mr. Milt Jenkins Dear Mr. Jenkins, Thank you for contacting me regarding the condition of health care and the importance of reform. I appreciate your interest and involvement in this critical issue. Please know that I recognize that we need health care reform now. The horror stories are all tool common, from mothers driven out of the hospital less than 24 hours after delivering a child to the misdiagnosis of a life threatening disease because a doctor was not allowed by the insurance company to perform and expensive test. Moreover, we in Iowa know full well that health care access in rural areas is seriously diminished. It is unacceptable that it is easier for someone to sue a doctor than to see one. Something must be done to address this without destroying the entire health care profession. I support an agenda designed to improve the accessibility, affordability and accountability of health care for every citizen. I will push for full, 100 percent deductibility of health care costs. I also believe strongly in expansion of Association Health Plans (AHP's), Medical Savings Accounts (MSA's) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA's). Each is a step toward empowering patients rather than health insurance bureaucracies. Family farms and small businesses are the backbone of the Iowa economy, but the current system has put them on and uneven playing field. Americans need health care savings accounts that are fully portable and can be used with any health insurance plan. My staff and I are dedicated to resolving our health care crisis. Please contact me again if you have further questions or concerns. I hope to see you next time I am in Sioux City. Sincerely, Steve King
