Machinists Union Endorses
John Kerry for President
Washington, D.C., February 16, 2004 - The International Association of
Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) announced today it endorsed
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry for President of the United States.
"Senator Kerry's campaign to win back the White House is unifying
working Americans from coast to coast," said Machinists President Tom
Buffenbarger in a video message to IAM members. "He can defeat George
W. Bush and end the one-sided trade deals and fiscal mismanagement that
have cost hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs. We will do all we can to
help him win the popular vote and the Electoral College vote.
"The current administration's abuse of working Americans and animus
towards labor unions can no longer be tolerated," said Buffenbarger.
"We earned the right long ago to promote better jobs, health care and
pensions for our members. We will not allow GOP extremists to turn the
American dream into a black and blue nightmare for thousands of our
members."
The IAM's endorsement brings support for the Kerry campaign from 50 states
and the District of Columbia. "Our members are a cross section of
America," said Buffenbarger. "What brings us together is pride
in our work, love for our country and contempt for anyone who fails to
respect the contributions of working men and women."
The IAM represents nearly 700,000 active and retired members and
administers more than 4,500 contracts in transportation, woodworking,
aerospace, manufacturing and defense related industries. Click here
