Fair Taxes for All Coalition Accelerates Battle Against Bush Tax Cuts

The Fair Taxes for All Coalition, made up of national membership and advocacy organizations, including the Alliance for Retired Americans, is engaged in a coast-to-coast organizing blitz to educate Americans about the real impact of President Bush's tax cut plan. The AFL-CIO, also a member, reminds retirees and working families that 47 percent of the tax cut would go to the wealthiest 5 percent of taxpayers. Twenty-eight percent of benefits would go to the top 1 percent of taxpayers. Data from the Tax Policy Center and Citizens for Tax Justice shows that, in 2003, almost 60 percent of the tax cuts would go to the top 10 percent of taxpayers whereas the bottom 60 percent of the population would receive only about 8 percent of the benefits of the tax cut. "Our analysis of the Bush plan finds that about 30 percent of the 134 million people who file tax returns – primarily low-income workers – would not receive any benefit," says George J. Kourpias, Alliance President. "Put another way, those with incomes below $40,000 would receive an average tax cut of $125; those with incomes between $40,000 and $75,000 would receive an average tax cut of $702; and those with incomes above $1 million would receive an average tax cut of almost $89,000. Is that fair? We think not," says Kourpias.
