UNIONS BOOST ECONOMIES--In a turnabout from its usual anti-union stance, the World Bank in a new report found that having a large number of workers represented by unions stabilizes and boosts an economy. Unionized workers earn more, work fewer hours and are better trained, according to the report, Unions and Collective Bargaining: Economic Effects in a Global Environment. Woodworker reinstated with $51,435 in back pay

Chief Steward Bill Connor of IAM Local W283 in L’Anse, MI received some great news recently. An arbitrator awarded him $51,435 dollars in back pay, made him whole for all losses and ordered that he be reinstated. IAM District W3 Business Representative Jere McFalda said, "It just goes to show, IAM membership pays."

Bill, who is a maintenance mechanic, merely transmitted a letter from his supervisor to the Division President of Celotex / British Plaster Board with the understanding that there would be no reprisal.

Everyone was told there was an open door policy. That door slammed quickly. The maintenance supervisor resigned under pressure. Chief Steward Bill Connor was terminated for unethical actions including but not limited to slanderous statements presented in a formal meeting with the Division President.

The arbitrator ruled that the company did not meet their burden of proof and allegations found in the letter would be of the type a Division President would be interested in.
Allegations of misuse of company funds to provide personal gain to company management and mistreatment of Union employees all would be things the Division President would want to know.
