‘U.S. bleeding jobs like a fire hose,’ says IAM President Buffenbarger
Washington, D.C., October 4, 2002 - Machinists President Tom Buffenbarger spoke up for tens of thousands of Americans when he charged Democrats as well as Republicans with ignoring the massive loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs to foreign competitors. "We’re bleeding jobs like a fire hose and we’re frustrated and tired with inaction from our government," declared Buffenbarger in a planned speech before the Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) in New York City. "The Bush administration is not alone in ignoring the unemployment crisis in this country," said Buffenbarger. "Eighty-three thousand manufacturing jobs are disappearing each month and neither Republicans nor Democrats have a comprehensive solution." New applications for unemployment insurance climbed to 417,000 last week as waves of previously laid-off workers exhausted the traditional 26 weeks of benefits. "By year’s end, more than 2 million workers will run out of unemployment benefits without finding new jobs," said the Machinists president. "Jobs is the issue facing millions of Americans this election year. "Candidates from both parties need to realize that every working family is threatened by the lack of an economic policy to protect high paying, high value jobs in this country," said Buffenbarger. "We have a right to demand a national policy that puts the unemployed back to work and protects the jobs of those still working." The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is among the largest industrial trade unions in North America, representing nearly 720,000 active and retired members.
