RESOLUTION NO.
SUBJECT: EIGHT-HOUR
DAY/FORTY-HOUR WEEK/VOLUNTARY OVERTIME

WHEREAS:
The accepted work day is eight (8) hours and the accepted
work week is forty (40) hours as a result of hard-fought battles,
dating back to the mid-1880s, by the Labor movement of this
country,
; and
WHEREAS:
The Labor movement has had a monumental impact on the
quality of life of all Americans by reducing the incidence of
fatigue-related injuries and deaths through its efforts to
establish accepted standard work days and work weeks,
; and
WHEREAS:
Overtime work should be compensated at a rate of at least
one-and-one-half times the hourly wage for hours worked in excess
of eight (8) hours in one day or forty (40) hours worked in one
week, and at a rate of at least two times the hourly wage for work
performed on Sundays and holidays,
; and
WHEREAS:
While some employees depend on income from overtime work to
support their families, overtime should not be mandated by the
employer, but rather it should be the employee's choice without
fear of reprisal from the employer,
; and
WHEREAS:
There exists a continuing assault on the eight (8) hour day
and the forty (40) hour week with regards to overtime pay by
federal and state legislation without any consideration for the
health, safety and economic burdens placed on the employee,
; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED:
That the Forty-Seventh Convention of the Iowa Federation of
Labor, AFL-CIO goes on record, to support the eight (8) hour day,
the forty (40) hour week and voluntary overtime,
; and, BE
IT FURTHER
RESOLVED:
That the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO urge all Central Labor
Councils and
Local Unions to oppose mandatory overtime and to speak out for,
and negotiated into their Collective
Bargaining Agreements language favorable to voluntary overtime,
; and, BE
IT FINALLY
RESOLVED:
That the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, all Central Labor
Councils and
Local Unions contact their State and U.S. Congressmen and Senators
urging them to oppose any and
all legislation that would encourage or impose mandatory overtime,
without regard to worker choice,
health & safety and economic compensation, in favor of
corporate greed.
