SPEAKERS
David

Jim
Jointz, Iowa Fair Trade Campaign
Mr. Jointz handed out a “Fair Trade Toolbox” – a plan to fight
back.
Byron
Orton, Iowa Labor Commissioner
Mr. Orton read 3 OSHA reports from recent Iowa
Work-related deaths. He noted
that Iowa has over 900,000 businesses and there are only 19 (down from 26)
OSHA inspectors – OSHA inspectors make $60,000/year, half of which is
paid by the Federal Gov. and half by the State.
Each inspector assesses $20,000-$25,000 in fines each year which
goes into the States General Fund. Yet
our State Legislators cannot find the extra $5,000-$7,000 per inspector to
properly staff the department – this is a deafening message to employers
from our Legislators to do what ever they want in regards to worker
safety.

Hessberg, Iowa Democratic Party
