RESOLUTION NO. SUBJECT: ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIONAL LABOR HISTORY MONTH REFERRED
TO: SUBMITTED BY:
International
Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Whereas: The Labor movement has had a monumental impact on the quality of life all Americans experience through tough battles fought in the business and political arena dating more than two (2) centuries in our country’s history, ; and Whereas: Many Americans, union and non-union households alike, are unaware of many of these struggles due to lack of information, time, and other inadequacies of the media and educational outlets, ;
and Whereas: The United States currently has recognized other constituency groups with National History Months to make the public more aware of the contributions certain groups have made to this country, such as National Women’s History Month and National Black History Month, ;
and Whereas: The celebration of Labor Day the first Monday of September, while certainly a cherished holiday by all accounts, is woefully inadequate in and of itself in educating the public about the contributions Unions, union members, and other working people have made to the lives of working families, ;
and Whereas: Many resources exist with various colleges, universities, non-profits, and training centers at International Unions and the AFL-CIO to help educate union members as well as the public on the importance these labor struggles have had on our current lifestyles, ;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the Forty-Seventh Convention of the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO goes on record to encourage its members, the National AFL-CIO, and other International Unions to join in a coalition urging Congress to pass a resolution recognizing the month of September of every year from point of passage as “National Labor History Month.” ;
and, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED: That this coalition will work with existing educational sources to develop curricula for public schools and organizations, Public Service Announcements, film and music festivals, and other events and activities to disseminate the labor message to the American public in order to recognize the history of our hard-fought struggles and victories to date and further our efforts for empowerment of working families. President:
Milt Jenkins
